(This was an article written for the Slytherin school newspaper and linked to in one of my posts. Hence all the HP references scattered throughout it. However, the Serpentimes seem to be down now, so I’m uploading a copy for your reference.)
Homemade Ornaments
Enjoy creating your own, unique ornaments? Know how to cross stitch? Want to learn how to make an ornament out of any cross stitch pattern? Perfect!
For those of you who don’t cross stitch, or simply don’t have the time to cross stitch too many patterns, you could simply sew two colorfully patterned pieces of cloth together in much the same fashion.
Just follow these easy steps and you’ll be well on your way to covering your home with handmade ornaments in time for the holidays!
Now, you can make these ornaments with any cross stitch pattern, but for your convenience I’ve provided one for you today, which I’ll be using for my example. It was designed by me specifically for this project, so I hope you enjoy it!

Glass Etching for Fun and Profit
So you’re interested in etching something into a glass, eh? A logo of some sorts perhaps? A name? Just some pretty symbols? Do you want a personalized drinking glass, or just to spruce up that old mirror or window? Well it’s not as difficult as it may seem! In fact, I’m going to attempt to describe this the Muggle way, so that any Muggleborns who want to wait until holiday to attempt this while stuck at home unable to legally do magic yet can still do so. For the rest of you, feel free to substitute magic for any of the steps as needed.

So, I made up this pattern for the Slytherin newspaper at http://hol.org.uk
The pattern, and instructions on how to make a biscornu are published there:
http://serpentimes.org/?p=1452
Edit: It seems the serpentimes is no longer working properly, so I’ve posted the article here in my blog as well.
Get the pattern here.

A prompt for HOL.
A masquerade mask.
Naturally, I had to make it Slytherin-y.
I love how it turned out. Now I just need an excuse to wear it somewhere.

So… I think my Slytherin costume is finally complete. :3
In time for both Halloween, and the pre-Deathly Hallows HP movie marathon.
Not to mention the movie release itself.
Not pictured:
My wand, which fits nicely into an appropriately sized pocket on the inner lining of the robe.
A not quite pleated black skirt.
Slytherin socks.
Cute loafer-like shoes with buckles.

Hah… so this is going to sound like the nerdiest thing ever.
I made this so that I could take pictures of the process of glass etching for an article I’m writing for the SerpenTimes.
What’s that, you ask? Why, it’s the Slytherin house newspaper at HOL.
That’s right. Virtual Hogwarts.
Stop judging me.

Yep. That’s what it looks like.
It’s about 3″ x 2 1/4″.
Started that over a year ago.
Just now getting around to finishing it.
It was for a class I took at HOL. While the class is no longer offered, you can still find the pattern on the professor’s deviantart: Ronja Liek

So… I haven’t been crafting as much lately.
But I have been baking things.
These are kind of nerdy, as they’re Slytherin colored. Silver cups and green icing. Then greenish cups and white icing.
:3
Devil’s food cake with cream cheese icing.

I’m finally finished!
MUCH better than that patch I made years ago..
Which, come to think of it, I never really finished. Oh well!
Yes, it’s a little crooked, but I was so excited to be done with it I had to cram it in a frame as soon as possible for proper pictures. I’ll probably fiddle with it a bit until it’s right. It’s awfully difficult to take pictures of pieces in frames. That darn glass…
Now to figure out what to work on next…
Just so you know, the pattern is available here: The Leaky Cauldron

I bet you guys are sick of seeing this one. But this should be the last update before it’s finished.
Only a little bit more to go!
